Construction Tutor – Milton Keynes

SENDhelp is recruiting a practical, enthusiastic and resilient Construction Tutor to join a specialist SEND setting in Milton Keynes, supporting young people aged 9-16 with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs.

This is an exciting opportunity for someone with experience in construction, carpentry, bricklaying, painting and decorating, property maintenance or another skilled trade who wants to use their knowledge to inspire young people through hands-on learning.

About the young people you’ll support

As a Construction Tutor in Milton Keynes, you’ll work with pupils who have Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs), primarily relating to Social, Emotional and Mental Health needs.

Some pupils may also have additional needs including:

• Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC)
• ADHD
• Speech, language and communication needs
• Moderate learning difficulties
• Emotional regulation and mental health needs
• Behaviour that can be challenging or distressed
• Gaps in education or previous difficulties engaging with classroom-based learning

For some of these young people, traditional academic learning hasn’t allowed them to demonstrate what they’re capable of.

Give them a practical task, the right tools and an adult who believes in them, and you may see a completely different learner.

Construction can provide pupils with an opportunity to develop practical ability alongside problem-solving, teamwork, communication, resilience and employability skills – while experiencing the satisfaction of creating something they can genuinely be proud of.

Your role as a Construction Tutor

As the Construction Tutor, you’ll deliver engaging, structured and appropriately challenging practical sessions while maintaining a safe and positive learning environment.

Depending on your experience and the curriculum, your responsibilities may include:

• Planning and delivering engaging construction and vocational sessions
• Teaching practical skills across areas such as carpentry, basic brickwork, painting and decorating, maintenance or general construction
• Demonstrating the correct and safe use of hand tools, equipment and materials
• Teaching pupils essential workshop and site safety practices
• Breaking practical projects into achievable stages to help pupils experience success
• Adapting activities for different learning abilities and SEND needs
• Connecting construction projects with functional maths, English and employability skills
• Developing pupils’ teamwork, communication and problem-solving abilities
• Establishing clear expectations, routines and professional boundaries
• Supporting pupils with emotional regulation and positive behaviour
• Building trusting relationships with young people who may previously have disengaged from education
• Monitoring and celebrating practical, academic and personal progress
• Maintaining high standards of health and safety
• Working collaboratively with teachers, Learning Support Assistants and the wider SEND team

You’ll encourage pupils to work towards increasing independence while introducing them to the professional standards expected within the construction industry.

From the building site to the classroom?

You don’t necessarily need to be a qualified teacher to have skills that could make you an excellent Construction Tutor.

We’re interested in hearing from professionals with backgrounds such as:

• General construction and building
• Carpentry and joinery
• Bricklaying
• Painting and decorating
• Property maintenance
• Plastering
• Multi-trade work
• Site supervision
• Construction training and apprenticeships
• Vocational education

If you’ve trained an apprentice, supervised junior tradespeople, demonstrated how to complete a job safely or managed a team on site, you’ve already developed valuable skills that can transfer into specialist education.

Relevant trade or construction qualifications and substantial hands-on experience would be highly desirable. Previous tutoring, assessing, mentoring or training experience would also be advantageous.

Most importantly, we’re looking for someone with patience, resilience and strong communication skills who can set clear boundaries while building positive relationships with young people.
