SENDhelp is recruiting a Learning Support Assistant to join a specialist SEND setting in Milton Keynes, supporting children and young people aged 9-16 with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs.

About the pupils you’ll support
As a Learning Support Assistant in Milton Keynes, you will work with pupils who have an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP), with SEMH identified as their primary area of need.
Some young people may also have additional needs including:
- Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC)
- ADHD
- Speech, language and communication needs
- Moderate learning difficulties
- Mental health and emotional regulation needs
- Behaviour that can be challenging or distressed
- Gaps in learning or previous difficulties engaging with education
For many pupils, success starts with trust, consistency and positive relationships. You’ll help create an environment where young people feel safe enough to engage, learn, develop their confidence and make progress.
What does a Learning Support Assistant do?
Working alongside teachers and the wider SEND team, your responsibilities as a Learning Support Assistant may include:
- Providing 1:1 and small-group support during lessons
- Helping pupils engage with learning and access an individualised curriculum
- Supporting emotional regulation and positive behaviour
- Recognising potential triggers and helping to de-escalate challenging situations
- Building positive, professional and consistent relationships with pupils
- Encouraging independence, confidence and social development
- Supporting pupils through transitions and changes to routine
- Helping create a safe, structured and nurturing learning environment
- Celebrating progress – including the small wins that can make a huge difference
No school experience? Your skills could be more transferable than you think.
Some of the strongest Learning Support Assistants come from outside education.
If you’ve worked in care, social care, residential support, mental health, youth work, mentoring, sports coaching or community services, you may already have many of the skills needed to succeed.
We’re particularly interested in people who can demonstrate patience, empathy, resilience, strong communication, boundary setting and the ability to remain calm under pressure.
Experience supporting vulnerable children, young people or adults can be highly transferable to this Learning Support Assistant role in Milton Keynes.
What matters is your ability to see beyond behaviour, build trust and remain a consistent positive presence for a young person.
