SEND Teaching Assistant – Stoke-sub-Hamdon, Somerset
Full-Time | Monday-Friday | Long-Term | ASAP Start | Opportunity to Go Permanent
Are you a Teaching Assistant who knows how to make a child feel safe, understood and ready to learn?
Do you have the patience to build trust, the confidence to support challenging moments and the consistency to keep showing up for a child who needs you?
We are recruiting a committed SEND Teaching Assistant to join a welcoming primary school in Stoke-sub-Hamdon, Somerset, providing dedicated 1:1 and small-group support to children with additional needs.
This is a full-time, 5-day-per-week position starting ASAP, offering genuine long-term stability and the opportunity to move into a permanent position for successful applicants who are interested.
For the right Teaching Assistant, this is an opportunity to become an important part of a child’s school experience.
Your Role as a SEND Teaching Assistant
You’ll work closely with class teachers and the wider SEND team to support children who may need additional help with learning, communication, social interaction, emotional regulation and engagement.
A significant part of your role will involve 1:1 support, alongside targeted work with small groups.
Some children may find the school day more challenging than others. They may become overwhelmed, struggle to communicate how they’re feeling or need additional support to regulate their emotions.
That’s where you come in.
As a SEND Teaching Assistant, you’ll provide the calm, consistent presence that helps children feel secure enough to engage, participate and make progress.
What Will You Be Doing?
Your responsibilities could include:
-
Providing dedicated 1:1 SEND support throughout the school day.
-
Delivering targeted interventions with individuals and small groups.
-
Supporting children with SEMH, Autism, ADHD, communication needs and additional learning needs.
-
Helping pupils recognise and regulate their emotions.
-
Providing co-regulation when children are overwhelmed or dysregulated.
-
Building trusting and professional relationships with pupils.
-
Supporting children to develop friendships, social skills and self-esteem.
-
Using visual supports and personalised strategies to make learning more accessible.
-
Providing additional support during transitions and less structured parts of the school day.
-
Helping pupils develop greater confidence and independence.
-
Supporting positive behaviour through calm, consistent approaches.
-
Working closely with teachers and SEND professionals to implement individual support strategies.
We’re Looking for Someone Who Understands Children
Qualifications are valuable.
But for this Teaching Assistant position, your approach matters just as much.
We’re looking for someone who understands that a child refusing to engage may actually be overwhelmed.
That challenging behaviour can communicate an unmet need.
And that sometimes the first step towards academic progress is helping a child feel safe, regulated and understood.
You’ll need to be patient, resilient, reliable and emotionally consistent.
Previous UK experience within education and/or health and social care is essential.
We’d particularly like to hear from candidates with experience as a:
Teaching Assistant | SEND Teaching Assistant | SEN Teaching Assistant | Learning Support Assistant | Behaviour Mentor | Youth Worker | Children’s Support Worker | Residential Support Worker | Care Worker
Experience supporting children with SEMH, Autism, ADHD, emotional regulation difficulties, communication needs or behaviours that challenge would be particularly valuable.
Could Your Health & Social Care Experience Transfer into Education?
Absolutely.
Some of the strongest SEND Teaching Assistants come from health and social care backgrounds.
If you’ve supported children, young people or vulnerable individuals in the UK, you may already have many of the skills schools need.
Patience. De-escalation. Communication. Safeguarding. Relationship-building. Understanding individual needs. Remaining calm under pressure.
If that sounds like your experience and you’re ready to build a career within education, we’d like to hear from you.
Why This Opportunity?
This is a school where emotional wellbeing and SEND support form an important part of everyday provision.
Children can receive support including 1:1 and small-group interventions, emotional literacy support, nurture provision, structured social opportunities, visual strategies, emotional regulation support and personalised approaches based around individual needs.
That makes this an excellent environment for a SEND Teaching Assistant who wants to develop meaningful experience rather than simply supervise a classroom.
You’ll work alongside experienced colleagues while developing your understanding of SEND, SEMH, emotional regulation and targeted intervention.
And because this is a long-term position, you’ll actually have the opportunity to see the progress your support creates.
We’re Looking for Commitment
Consistency can make an enormous difference to children with SEND.
That’s why we’re specifically looking for someone who can commit to full-time work, Monday to Friday.
This isn’t aimed at candidates looking for occasional supply days.
We’re looking for a Teaching Assistant who wants to settle into one school, understand their pupils properly and become a familiar, trusted part of their school day.

Location: Stoke-sub-Hamdon, Somerset
Start: ASAP
Hours: Full-time, Monday to Friday – 5 days per week
Contract: Long-term and ongoing

Ready for Something Long-Term?
