Your Role as a SEND Teaching Assistant in Hampshire
As a SEND Teaching Assistant, you’ll work closely with teachers and other professionals to help pupils aged 4-19 access education, overcome barriers to learning and develop greater independence.
Depending on your experience, you could support younger children, secondary-aged pupils or young people preparing for adulthood.
Your responsibilities will include:

Providing 1:1 and small-group support to children and young people aged 4-19.

Supporting pupils with ASC, SEMH and additional needs.

Helping teachers deliver engaging and differentiated learning activities.

Building positive, consistent and trusting relationships with young people.

Promoting positive behaviour, engagement and independence.

Recognising potential triggers and supporting pupils with emotional regulation.

Using proactive strategies to prevent and de-escalate challenging situations.

Helping create a calm, structured and safe learning environment.

Supporting pupils to develop confidence, communication and social skills.

Adapting your approach according to pupils’ age, developmental level and individual needs.

Working collaboratively with teachers, pastoral staff and other specialist professionals.

Helping older pupils develop independence and skills for life beyond school.
What We’re Looking For
For this SEND Teaching Assistant role in Hampshire, we’re looking for someone who can combine empathy and patience with clear boundaries and consistency.
Ideally, you will:

Have previous experience supporting children or young people with SEND.

Have experience with autism, SEMH, behaviours that challenge or communication needs.

Be comfortable supporting pupils across a 4-19 age range.

Be confident building relationships with pupils who may previously have struggled to engage with education.

Understand positive behaviour management and de-escalation strategies.

Remain calm, consistent and professional in challenging situations.

Be patient, flexible and enthusiastic.

Have strong communication and teamwork skills.

Be committed to safeguarding and improving outcomes for vulnerable young people.
Previous school experience is desirable, but we’re also interested in candidates across Hampshire with relevant experience in youth work, residential care, support work, mental health services, sports coaching or other roles supporting children and young people.
