Key Responsibilities of an SEN Specialist Teacher (Maths)

As an SEN Specialist Teacher, you will:

  • Plan and deliver differentiated Maths lessons tailored to individual EHCP targets
  • Adapt the Maths curriculum to meet a wide range of learning needs and abilities
  • Create a structured, inclusive, and engaging classroom environment
  • Use SEN-specific strategies such as visual aids, manipulatives, and sensory approaches to support Maths learning
  • Work collaboratively with teaching assistants, therapists, and senior leaders
  • Monitor, assess, and report on pupil progress in Maths and across wider development areas
  • Support emotional regulation and positive behaviour using consistent approaches
  • Lead or contribute to Annual Reviews and EHCP planning
  • Build strong relationships with parents, carers, and external professionals

What We’re Looking For

We are seeking an SEN Specialist Teacher who has:

Qualifications:

  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) – essential
  • A strong background in teaching Maths
  • Additional SEN qualifications or training – desirable

Experience:

  • Proven experience working within a specialist or SEN setting
  • Experience teaching Maths to pupils with ASC, SEMH, or complex needs
  • Strong understanding of EHCP processes and personalised learning

Knowledge & Skills:

  • Knowledge of behaviour management strategies (e.g. Team Teach, Zones of Regulation)
  • Ability to break down Maths concepts into accessible, engaging learning steps
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills
  • Patience, resilience, and a genuine passion for SEN education
