As a Teaching Assistant, you’ll have the opportunity to provide meaningful, personalised support, helping a child develop communication, confidence, independence and essential learning skills.
About the Teaching Assistant Role
This Marlow Teaching Assistant position involves supporting a primary-aged learner with complex SEND, including autism, significant developmental delays and non-verbal communication needs.
You will work alongside another experienced Teaching Assistant, with both professionals supported and guided by a qualified Lead Teacher.
Unlike a traditional classroom position, this Teaching Assistant role offers the opportunity to build a consistent relationship with one learner and deliver highly individualised education.
Key Responsibilities
As a Specialist Teaching Assistant, you will:
-
Deliver engaging, sensory-based and play-led educational activities aligned with the learner’s EHCP.
-
Support non-verbal communication using Makaton, PECS, visual aids and Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) approaches.
-
Encourage independence, communication, emotional regulation and developmental progress.
-
Establish positive relationships and create a nurturing, engaging learning environment.
-
Implement educational strategies and session plans developed by the qualified Lead Teacher.
-
Work collaboratively with your fellow Teaching Assistant to ensure consistent and effective support.
-
Monitor learner engagement and contribute to weekly educational progress reports.
-
Participate in regular professional meetings and ongoing supervision.
Essential Teaching Assistant Experience
This is a specialist Teaching Assistant vacancy in Marlow requiring previous hands-on experience with complex SEND.
Applicants must demonstrate:
-
Previous experience supporting children with PMLD, SLD, profound developmental delays or similarly complex SEND.
-
Experience supporting non-speaking or minimally verbal autistic children.
-
Practical experience with Makaton, PECS, visual communication or other AAC strategies.
-
Experience delivering sensory-based, play-led or early developmental learning activities.
-
A strong understanding of autism, individualised SEND support and communication difficulties.
-
The ability to follow educational plans and work collaboratively with a qualified Lead Teacher.
-
A patient, nurturing, reliable and proactive approach.
Previous employment as a Teaching Assistant in a specialist SEND school, complex needs provision or similar educational environment would be particularly advantageous.
Desirable Additional Experience
-
Epilepsy and seizure awareness.
-
Supporting children with physical disabilities or additional medical needs.
-
Sensory integration, Intensive Interaction or Attention Autism.
-
Implementing Speech and Language Therapy or Occupational Therapy strategies.
-
Paediatric First Aid and specialist healthcare training.
