It helps manage emotional states including excitement, anxiety, frustration and joy. It provides predictable, controllable sensory input in environments that may be unpredictable and overstimulating. It can support concentration by providing background sensory engagement that frees cognitive resources for other tasks.

Common auditory stims include humming and repeating phrases. Common tactile stims include rubbing textures or squeezing objects. The stim provides familiar, controllable input that helps the nervous system return to a state of balance. Forcing an autistic person to suppress their stims without providing alternative ways to manage emotional states removes an important coping mechanism and typically increases distress.

In a small number of cases, stims may become a concern when they are self-injurious or prevent engagement in desired activities. In these situations, the goal should be to understand the function and address the underlying sensory or emotional need through other means, not simply to eliminate the stim.
